Review of the 8th Axion Hellas action
Our 8th sailing trip to the three small islands of the Ionian Sea, Meganissi, Kalamos and Kastos, was completed with absolute success. We would like to thank all the partners and institutions that contributed to the realization of our last action.
In three days we carried out 1595 medical operations, of which 483 in Kastos and Kalamos and 1112 in Meganissi.
Our action was supported by the Hellenic Cancer Society with the provision of a portable MRI scanner, with which 51 mammograms were carried out. With the valuable contribution of the Euroclinic, we provided microbiological, histological and Pap tests. Through our new partnership with Galiotos Ercare , hearing screening was provided to residents and hearing aids were given free of charge to those who needed them. We also collaborated with the Armed Forces and in consultation with the Chief of the Armed Forces, specialized military doctors were added to the medical team in the radiology, endocrinology and psychiatry clinics. Close to us, once again, was Vision of Hope, which participated in the team's activities and informed the islanders about bone marrow transplantation.
For the safe transportation of the medical equipment we would like to thank Toyota Hellas for providing 2 vehicles. We would also like to thank the Corinth Canal Company and the General Manager of the Company for responding to Axion Hellas' request for free transit.
As part of our cultural activities, a unique event entitled "The Crossing from yesterday to today in art and gastronomy" was held, where the women of Meganissi traveled to the traditional flavors and arts of the place. We would like to thank Chef Argyro Barbarigou and the Benaki Museum-NIMA for the excellent presentation and organization of the event.
Together with WWF Greece and the young islanders we played the experiential game "Blue Exploration". The aim was to learn and raise awareness about the marine ecosystem. We would like to thank WWF Greece for coordinating the game. We would also like to thank UN SDSN Greece and the GNHM Goulandris Natural History Museum for organizing the "Oceans" activity, in which residents of all ages were informed about the oceans, seas and ways to protect them from climate change. In addition to education on environmental issues, our young friends put on a performance of "The Feat of Dakry" by the author, Athena Binios.
Axion Hellas was accompanied on this trip by the Association "Together for Children". It offered psychological support to families and children living in these beautiful, remote areas of Greece.
We would like to thank the company Lavdas for offering sweet gifts to the young inhabitants of the islands. A big thank you to ANT1 TV and ERT channels for being with us throughout our activities and communicating our work.
We could not leave out our awesome team of volunteers. Their selfless service and love for the residents of the actions make each of our missions unique!
