4th Mission: MEGANISI – KALAMOS – KASTOS 09.03 – 11.03.2018

Axion Hellas once again made the difference and carried out a mission of soul on 3 remote islands of the Ionian Sea, Meganisi, Kastos and Kalamos on March 8-11 2018. The team of 101 volunteers based in Meganisi carried out medical examinations and educational events for island residents. In particular, in Kastos there were also home medical visits.

The response of residents to Axion Hellas’s appeal was touching as their access to medical checks was limited. During the mission 1736 medical acts were carried out with the active participation of 50 doctors and 8 nurses. The clinics that were set up consisted of the following specialties: pediatric, pathological, cardiology, pneumonology, endocrinology, ophthalmology, gastroenterology, general surgery, urology, gynecological, dental, microbiological, orthopedic, neurological and mental health.

Tests like Pap test, spirometry, heart triplex, thyroid ultrasound, breast ultrasound and ultrasound of compact organs and vessels were also performed.

The group’s cultural and educational agenda was centered on children and parents. Both the students and the educational community of Meganisi and Kalamos responded wholeheartedly. The program “We are all true heroes” was designed to awaken children as their personal identity, the concept of friendship and respect, and the value of the community they belong to through experiential and fun games with the support of the British Council of Greece.

In this context, Axion Hellas has collaborated with Marianna V. Vardinoyannis Foundation and the Robert F. Kennedy Foundation Human Rights Foundation for “We Tell the Truth in Power” program, with the International Olympic Truce Center and the Hellenic Olympian Association as part of the educational anti-school bullying program based on Olympic values and with theatrologist Ms. E. Papaioannou who helped children express themselves through a play. The parents attended speeches and information from the Electronic Crime Department on safe online use, the ELIZA Association on Child Abuse and Special Nutritionist Mrs. Kostra on balanced nutrition for the young and the elderly.

On the side of Axion Hellas, Orama Elpidas Association was there to inform about the necessity of bone marrow donation and registering new donor volunteers.

The most important was the delivery of the newly constructed playground of Meganisi, which was the work of Axion Hellas with the kind sponsorship of Neptune Lines, in the presence of the municipality of Meganisi, the Mayor of Meganisi Mr. P. Daglas, residents of the island, the Eminent Metropolitan of Lefkada & Ithaca Theophilos who made sanctification and the Apostle of Lefkada Mr. Th. Chalikia. The team does not omit at any action, to offer school equipment and medicines that are given with the kind sponsorship of Oloi Mazi Boroume.
